Mulching, in short, is good landscape practice.

The Benefits of Mulching Your Garden

Mulching is a major step in creating a landscape that is abundant, well-kept and full trees and plants that have happy microbes returning nutrient and minerals back to them. Mulch is a material that acts as a protective barrier on the ground around plants and provides the most important role: A protective house for soil microbes. There are two types of mulches —organic and non-organic. Both varieties provide many benefits.

What does mulch contain?

Materials used to create organic mulches include wood chips, pine, leaves, compost, grass clippings, animal manure and more. Non-organic mulches contain materials like rubber, plastic, gravel, and pebbles, as an ethical earth business we will not use any chemical mulches full stop. You have to consider your final application when you’re choosing mulch.  Pine straw, for example, is great for acid loving plants like strawberries or blueberries. Before we learn more about good mulching practices, let us take a look at some of the benefits of mulching.

Top 5 reasons why you should mulch – Truths and Myths

  • Moisture retention – Its true both organic and non-organic mulches retain soil moisture and prevent your plants from drying out, especially in the hot and dry months. Because of this, you will have to water less frequently. When you add mulch, microbes breakdown the mulch. They increase soil carbon and this intern helps retain moisture in the carbon like  sponge.
  • Inhibits the growth of weeds – Thats a bit of a myth.  If you mulch open spaces in your garden, you will stop weeds in their tracks. Low soil carbon is a prime reason weed grow. This section is not big enough to go into the full story. The mulch prevents sunlight from reaching the weeds and thereby inhibits weed germination and growth. Total myth, addition of a mulch with compost and manure mixed in increase soil carbon and weeds don’t  grow in healthy soil. This will take time so be mindful.
  • Reduces soil erosion – So true, mulch acts as a barrier a sponge if you choose a good quality mulch, preventing rainwater from hitting the soil with force and washing it away. It also regulates soil temperature fluctuations that are known to damage plants and a happy home for microbes.
  • Nourishes the soil – Not exactly. We need to feed and house soil microbes. We can’t feed plants. Microbes & Fungi have symbiotic relationships with plants, they seek out minerals and nutrients and give them to the plants via the roots in exchange for sugars.
  • Wards off pests – Yes… but back up the bus. Its microbes and fungi that protect plants. Healthy soils with abundant microbes in balance ward of pests. Certain varieties of mulch deter pests in your garden. Mulches that are highly fragrant or those that have insect repelling properties are the best. Cedar bark is one such example.

 Mulching Tips

Organic mulches add value to the soil and promote soil micro-organism activity,  To keep your Landscape abundant, make sure the mulch is between 75 and 100 mm in depth. Its a bit of a myth when we see quotes like “Don’t apply more than a 4-inch thick layer of mulch as this will stop water from getting into the soil”. This is a sponge layer of organic matter. Its will act like a slow releases irrigation down to your plants.
